Crystal Night is a turning point in history that led to the death of most Jews in Germany.

Kristallnacht or Crystal Night is the name given to the night of November 9-10, 1938; it was the night when German Nazis attacked Jewish people and their properties.

This term arose from the horrific night when the members of the Jewish community in Germany were snatched from their houses and were either killed or brought to their torture camps.

Crystal Night translated to the debris of shattered glasses left on the streets after that most horrible night.
During that night, over 7,500 Jewish shops and houses were demolished and 400 synagogues were burnt down. Ninety-one Jews were killed during this night alone and more than 20,000 were brought to the concentration camps.

This dreadful event took place as an impetuous reaction of the German people when they learned that a young Jew named Herschel Grynszpan had murdered Ernst vom Rath, a German diplomat.

In history, writers declared that the 17-year-old Grynszpan was a pitiable Jewish boy who had been driven to anguish by the prejudice done to his family and in his deep depression, he shot the young German diplomat.

A special annual commemoration was being held in Munich since the 9th of November.
the Memorial Day for the martyred heroes of the National Socialist movement. Since then, Adolf Hitler and the Party veterans, along with all of the Gauleiters (regional Party leaders), reportedly met annually in Munich for this occasion.

There were no signs that an event of this magnitude would happen in Germany. Before that night, everybody considered Germany as an extremely peaceful country. It was only during the ceremonial dinner at the Old Town Hall that the first infrequent news of riot and demolition reached Munich from some of the Gauleiter’s resident offices.

The fate of the German Jews after Crystal Night

After Crystal Night, the numbers of Jews wishing to flee Germany increased radically.
Hitler has prearranged a creation of central agency to hasten the Jews’ immigration. Emigration procedures were simplified, yet another problem occurred when almost all countries refused to admit Jews. Palestine was the only country that allowed Jews during that time, provided they possessed one thousand pounds sterling each, as required by the British authorities there.

It has been calculated that between 1933 and 1939, approximately half the Jewish population of Germany left the nation. Several important Jews including the Jewish scientists were among the evacuees.

Crystal Night was one of the most shameful events involving the National Socialists in Germany. Although the Jews were arrested, beaten and suffered initially, the greatest harm was ultimately done to Germany’s reputation.
